Tips on creating your ideal team

Most small business owners fly solo for a while before they think about getting help. Flying solo is easy in comparison to employing and leading a team - even a team of only 1 or 2. For many owners, choosing, training and leading a team of people is like speaking Chinese - they know millions of people do it every day but for them it's impossible to understand!

So here are a few tips to help you get started. When you've read these, there's more on the Grow Your Team page as well. And if all else fails and you still need help - just give me a yell and I'll show you just how easy it can be to lead a motivated, happy, efficient team.

1. Recruit well

You can't build a great team if you pick the wrong people. It's like trying to finish a jigsaw puzzle with the wrong pieces. Be systematic. Create a job description (based on the duties of the job you have in mind). Now write down the attributes necessary for some one to perform these duties.

2. Train well

Sure people you employ will have some skills - maybe a lot of skills. But they haven't worked for you before, in your business, using your systems and reaching your standards. So before they start tell them exactly what they are expected to do. Show them your system, the forms you use, the way you like things done.

3. Give them feedback and praise

No one likes to live like a mushroom - kept in the dark and fed lots of bull---- ! So if you want your employees to be a happy, productive team you need to take some responsibility for their performance. Watch how they behave. Monitor their output. Check their quality. Keep an eye on their interactions - especially with your customers. No need to spy - do it openly as part of your daily management activities. Then give them feedback. Pat them on the back fro doing well. Show them how to do better when they make mistakes. They'll love you for it and reward you with improved performance.
